The time has come to look back at 2019, reflect and finally set some goals for the upcoming year (well, this year at the time you’re reading this).
If you’ve been reading The Nerdy Me for quite some time, you’d remember that I used to do memory jars for each year (take a look at 2015, 2016, 2017 jars if you’d like). I bloody loved keeping all those little notes, tickets and whatnots in a cute jar for my future self to reflect on. But it’s not very practical, so I quit making memory jars last year.
On the bright side, now I get to pick my brain and train my memory in order to remember all the things that I did (or didn’t do, to be quite frankly) during the year. So, let’s take a look at how my 2019 looked like and later I will reveal my world of the year for 2020. Exciting!
01: Personal life in 2019
01.1: I travelled A LOT! If you’re following me on Instagram (which you definitely should do right now if you haven’t already!), you’d know that 2019 has been amazing to me travel vice. I travelled to 3 new destinations (Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro) and re-visited 6 (Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria). It might not sound like a lot to some but it looks incredible to me as I’ve started 2019 with no travel plans whatsoever.
01.2: I read 30 books! I’m so proud of my 2019 self for completely over-doing my goal of 15 books. I used to read so much and it’s one of my favourite hobbies but with university and other projects, I’ve been struggling to read more. So, managing to read 30 books is a pretty damn good achievement for me. By the way, you can keep up with my reading during this year as well on Goodreads.
01.3: I put my mental health first! I’ve been struggling with anxiety and poor mental health for years now. This is why self-care was and still is one of the most important things in my personal and professional life. In 2019, I hiked more, I spent more time reading, I started giving zero sh*t about Instagram, I started working out (not regularly but I’m working on it!), walking more and simply letting fewer things affect me in a negative way. I’d love to keep up this in 2020 as well.
02: Blogging life
02.1: I landed some amazing brand deals! 2018 has been amazing for my blog but 2019 opened up even more amazing opportunities. I didn’t do any press trips but I worked with brands such as HappySocks, Kind and Mollers that I absolutely love and adore. In 2020, I really want to focus on working with brands and companies which I already use and love more. These are my favourite collaborations.
02.2: I diversified my income! I’ve had crap months and I’ve had incredible months income vice in 2019. I landed some pretty big writing gigs, projects, I continued earning from my consulting services (check them out here!), I did better on my affiliate income. All in all, I had quite a few streams of income this year and I’m so proud of myself for managing that.
02.3: I changed things up on TNM! You probably noticed that I changed the whole look of this website, the colours, the font and all in between. While I’m quite happy with the current look and the general direction I’m going to, I bloody hate how difficult this website theme has been. I’ve spent waaaaay too much money, time and energy on trying to make it work (a sad reality of having a blog), so in 2020 I’m looking forward changing everything once again and finding a theme that actually works for me. So keep an eye out for that!
03: Word of the year for 2020
Long gone are the days I sit down and think of a list of goals (resolutions) that I want to achieve in the following year. I’ll not get too much into it, but setting a list of goals is just not working for me. If you want, you can read why I quit setting goals in this blog post.
Instead, I decided to choose a word each year that should guide me through the year. This way I’m not weighing myself down by numbers that I need to achieve. I know the whole idea of goals is to make them S.M.A.R.T. and all that, which means adding numbers and blah blah blah. But hear me out, it’s just not for everybody, you know.
Or I simply don’t know how to create achievable goals, so there’s that…
Anyway! Back to my word of the year.
Last year, I decided that my focus word will be ‘simplify’ because I liked the idea of making each aspect of my life (personal, finance, blogging, etc.) a bit easier to navigate and overall less complicated.
And you know what? I actually managed to simplify almost everything in my life. I don’t feel trapped and confused by my finances anymore because I FINALLY have a system which helps me when it comes to saving and spending money. I set up my blogging calendar, so it’s much easier to use, be accountable for. I could go on for ages.
Bottom line – focus words over regular goals anytime.
Since I spent all 2019 trying to make my life less complicated and easier to navigate, I now can focus on something else for 2020.
So my word of the year for 2020 is…
Yes, my focus word of 2020 is focus. But this is the word I need for 2020 if I want to really get through it successfully.
2020 will be the year I graduate university and the year I, hopefully, go on a very exciting backpacking adventure if everything goes according to the plan. So, as you can imagine, I really do need to stay focused to write my bachelor thesis in order to graduate.
As for the backpacking adventure, I need to focus on spending as less as possible, so the majority of my income would go towards the funding of the trip. You might have seen on my Instagram (follow me if you want to keep up on a day-to-day basis!), I’m planning on spending a few months backpacking Southeast Asia. It’s been on my mind forever and I can’t wait to finally make it a reality.
I’ll do my best to keep you guys updated on the whole saving, planning process of it. Let me know what you’d like to read more about and I’ll make that happen.
I think that’s all! I very much look forward to 2020 and what this year is going to bring me. Even though the majority of the year is looking like months of me sitting in front of computer writing thesis and spending evenings in the library trying to finish university, I am thrilled to finally put an end to this stage of my life. I loved university but, man, I need a break lol.
Anyway, I hope your 2020 is filled with challenging but enjoyable experiences and only positive energy. Happy 2020, guys!
