Have you ever been interested in Japan? I sure did! I believe it is a country with a phenomenal culture, and being from the West, I am dazzled by everything I learn from them, beginning with its nature(the iconic Mount Fuji, I mean!) and its people, who are often named as respectful, kind, full of wisdom. Let’s not forget its traditions that are ancient, full of charm and history. And of course, its capital Tokyo, the summit of technology, fashion and its gardens that date back to the 17th century.

For different reasons in life, one cannot always know the places one longs for in one’s dreams, but that is not a limitation to knowing or enjoying such a fascinating country. Today we have tools that allow us to discover those places, for example by taking a virtual tour or watching videos of travelers giving their advice and enjoying an unparalleled experience through their eyes.

One of the other ways to get to experience a culture is by trying its flavors. You could go to a Japanese restaurant in your city or simply try out some of their incredible flavors by ordering a subscription box such as Tokyo Treat.

Disclaimer: Tokoy Treat kindly sent me one of their boxes to try out in exchange for an honest review. However, as always, all opinions are my own and genuine.

What is Tokyo Treat?

Tokyo Treat is a monthly subscription service that sends boxes full of Japanese snacks and sweets directly to subscribers’ doors around the world. These boxes include a variety of exclusive and limited-edition Japanese products that are not easy to find outside of Japan.
It works simply, you subscribe to their membership and choose a plan, and in exchange, you get a box with the coolest and craziest Japanese snacks and sweets every month.

Enjoy exclusive and limited edition Japanese snack boxes delivered to your door by Tokyo Treat!

You can try very interesting things like Fanta ume flavor soda or wasabi KitKat. Both very different smells and flavors from what we are used to. What I like about services like this one is that I can discover and enjoy those products that I was completely unaware of from the comfort of my home.

Bets of all, each month the box comes in a different theme based on the season or topic, which means the contents of the box change and you never get the same snacks twice.

Important Tokyo Treat box details

Here is a quick overview of the most important details of the Tokyo Treat subscription box, including what’s inside, how much it costs, and shipping information.

What’s included in the Tokyo Treat box?

Each Tokyo Treat box includes 15-20 full-size Japanese snacks. The creators of the box hand-pick awesome, limited-edition Japanese snacks that change every month. Here are the categories of the products that are included:

  • Exclusive Japanese drinks,
  • Rare Japanese KitKat flavors,
  • Crazy Japanese candy,
  • Japanese instant ramen,
  • Crunchy chips and salty snacks,
  • Japanese-style cakes, cookies, and breads.

How much does the Tokyo Treat box cost?

Like any other subscription service, Tokyo Treat has a few subscription plans to choose from. Here is a quick rundown of the prices based on the plan:

  • 1 month: $37.50/month
  • 3 months: $35.50/month
  • 6 months: $33.50/month
  • 12 months: $32.50/month.

Taking in the account that the box includes 15-20 full-sized products, that is quite a bargain. Most boxes usually include a lesser amount of products or include only a few full-sized ones.

How much does shipping cost?

The one downside that I have noted is that, unfortunately, shipping is not included in the price and it is not free. They have standard prices of shipping that range from $10.50 to $12.50, depending on the country of delivery.

So you definitely have to take the shipping price into account. However, for the amount of snacks and the weight of the box, I would say the shipping cost is in the affordable range. Not saying I don’t enjoy a good old free shipping offer from companies.

How long does Tokyo Treat take to deliver?

According to their website, after the order is placed, the box is prepared and packed within 3-5 business days. The rest depends on your country’s shipping method. So the estimated delivery times are these:

  • DHL shipping: 3-5 days,
  • Express Shipping: 5-10 days,
  • JapanPost Priority Shipping: 14-28 days,
  • Surface Mail: 60-90 days.

I was honestly surprised about how fast the box reached me. It took less than a week and it was here in Argentina. Next up it took quite some time in the customs but it is the problem of the Argentinian post system which has nothing to do with the Tokyo Treat service. Unfortunately, things just work differently in Argentina. Moving on…

My review of the Tokyo Treat Box

I received a May edition Tokyo Treat box, Ninja Snackventure, and as you can tell it was a ninja-themed box. I loved the idea of snacks inspired by ninjas, their history and culture. Here are all the things that were included in this box:

  • KitKat Chocolate Orange
  • Ninja Hard Gummies – Grape
  • Katana Candy Sword
  • Ninja Grape Mints
  • Endou Pea Chips
  • Gold Nebuta Apple Juice
  • Kabuki Wasabi Rice Crackers
  • Sesame Crunch
  • Strawberry Dorayaki
  • Pandaro Cookie
  • Spicy Ramen Noodles
  • Shrimp Crackers
  • Potato Fry
  • Kinako Mochi Stick
  • Surprise Snack Attack!

I am not going to lie, I was fascinated by the packaging and colorfulness of each snack, candy. There is just something about Japanese marketing that I adore.

Some of my favorite items from this box were KitKat chocolates, Potato Fry, Ninja Hard Gummies, and Strawberry Dorayaki. But, honestly, all of the snacks were so good and tasty, I now want to repurchase some of them.

Aside from the delicious snacks, I liked the informative booklet that was inside the box. It gave a bit of information about each product, the ingredients, as well as fun facts about ninja history and pop culture.

All in all, I enjoyed a lot the box and diving into Japanese culture. Makes me want to visit Japan even more!

So is the Tokyo Treat box worth it?

Considering its price and the products included, I would say that it is well worth the money. Like I mentioned before, compared to the other boxes in the market, I feel like this one is the biggest one.

The only thing is that you have to consider the shipping cost which can add up. If not for a 12-month subscription, you can at least try it out for once, if you are curious about Japanese culture and cuisine but can’t afford to keep it up long-term. Also, I feel like it makes a great gift idea for anyone who loves Japan or is fascinated by its culture.
