Traveling can be an incredible experience that broadens our horizons and helps to create unforgettable memories. However, it’s no secret that travel can sometimes come with its fair share of stress. In this blog post, we will explore four simple yet effective ways to keep stress at bay and make your travel experience smoother, more enjoyable, and oh-so-relaxing. Let’s dive in!
Plan ahead
Planning ahead is one of the most effective ways to keep stress at bay while traveling. Take it from me, a serial worrier with underlying anxiety…
By taking the time to research and book accommodations, transportation, and activities in advance, you’ll save yourself from those dreaded last-minute hassles. Imagine arriving at your destination with the peace of mind knowing that your hotel is waiting for you, and you have a detailed itinerary to follow (not for everyone, I know!). Plus, if you tend to experience travel stress, then having everything organized gives you a sense of control over your trip, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience without constantly worrying about logistics. So, whether it’s researching the best local restaurants, booking tickets to that must-visit museum, or finding the perfect spot for sunset viewing, a little bit of planning goes a long way in reducing stress and creating a smoother, more enjoyable travel experience.
Pack strategically
Picture this: you’re standing at the airport, luggage in hand, and you suddenly realize you’ve packed way more than you need. The stress starts to creep in as you struggle to maneuver through crowds and handle the weight of your oversized suitcase. Happened to everyone at least once.
However, with a little strategic packing, you can avoid this unnecessary stress trigger. Start by making a checklist of essential items and prioritize what you truly need for your trip. Pack versatile clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched, and don’t forget to check the weather forecast at your destination to pack accordingly.
Remember, less is more when it comes to travel packing. By packing light, you’ll not only save yourself from the physical strain of lugging around heavy bags, but you’ll also have more freedom to explore and move around comfortably. If you aren’t sure how to start packing light, check out my other blog post that includes a detailed check-list for traveling with hand-luggage only.
Practice self-care
Traveling, while exciting, can also be exhausting. Jet lag, unfamiliar environments, and disrupted routines can take a toll on your well-being and overall mood. I’ve made the mistake of wanting to do it all and forgetting to take care of my well-being in the past and it ended up in massive anxiety attacks or overall much less enjoyable travel experiences.
That’s why it’s crucial to prioritize self-care when you are traveling. Start by ensuring you get enough sleep. Rest is vital for recharging your body and mind, so try to establish a bedtime routine even when you’re away from home. I know it is easier said than done, especially if you like to go out and explore the nightlife of the place. Making sure you have some rest nights during your trip is a great way to avoid over-exhausting your body.
Staying hydrated is another key aspect of self-care while traveling. Keep a water bottle handy and sip on it throughout the day to keep yourself energized and refreshed. Especially if you are doing more physical activities such as hiking, trekking or simply exploring cities in very hot and humid climates.
Also, it’s important to listen to your body and take breaks when needed. Allow yourself downtime to relax, unwind, and recharge. Whether it’s sitting in a park, enjoying a cup of coffee at a café, or taking a leisurely stroll, find moments to pause and rejuvenate. Your body and mind will thank you for it.
Unwind with entertainment
If you have quite a lot of downtime planned during your trip, pack your carry-on bag with your favorite entertainment. Books, magazines, or e-readers are perfect companions if you are a bookie like me. If reading isn’t your thing, then downloading your favorite TV shows or movies onto your device is always a great idea. You can’t always trust that your airline or bus company will have entertainment options suitable for your taste, especially in foreign countries.
Another great way to pass downtime or simply unwind after a long travel day is to play some games. You can bring along card games or simply explore the realm of online gaming. While you probably won’t have access to Sims and other more sophisticated games, you can’t have just as much fun on sites such as plays.org.
This website offers thousands of different games from old-school Solitaire or Sudoku to more modern video games. Seriously, I think you can find any type of game that you are looking for.
While I am not the most adventurous person when it comes to online gaming, I love passing my downtime with some mind-engaging games such as Mahjong. It reminds me of my childhood days when I wasn’t allowed to play online games and I could only watch as my mom played this weirdly entertaining game of matching stones with Japanese-looking drawings.
