The Czech Republic is one of those countries that you could revisit each year and still find exciting something you haven’t seen or visited before. With 13 regions and a beautiful capital that is known for its stunning architecture, there is so much to see and explore from vast landscapes to cuisine and unique customs.
I had the pleasure of visiting the Czech Republic twice and to this day I still have a long list of places I would love to visit and discover in this diverse country, especially as an outdoor person who has a slight weakness for beautiful hiking trails and history.
Located almost in the heart of Central Europe, Czech Republic’s capital, Prague, quickly became one of the top-visited cities in Europe. It is no secret that if you enjoy a bit of nature, trying out different cuisines, learning more about the customs and traditions, as well as history, Czech Republic is a perfect destination for that.
However, with popularity comes a threat of overtourism, as well as an increased ecological footprint that can create damaging effects on our world as it is. So in order to ensure that our future generations get to experience the world as we do, the best way forward is to implement sustainable tourism practices and to become more responsible travellers.
Good thing is that the Czech Republic is quickly transitioning to become one of the best countries for sustainable tourism. So you can choose more sustainable options while travelling around the country and experience the joys of travelling without guilt.
So if you are planning a trip to this beautiful country but want to explore it as sustainably as possible, keep on reading.

Top sustainable travel spots in Czech Republic
Ever since the United Nations has declared 2017 to be the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, the Czech Republic has been ranked among the highest-ranking countries in the world for progress towards sustainable development goals.
Once you start doing a bit of research, it’s not hard to see why. So here are some of the top sustainable tourism options to explore while in the Czech Republic.
Bohemian Switzerland National Park
Bohemian Switzerland is a national park in Northern Bohemia that has been made the European Destination of ExcelleNce. It is a project of the European Commission with a goal to promote lesser-known regions with an emphasis on authenticity, diversity and development of sustainable tourism.
The national park is mostly known for its enchanting landscape full of sandstone rock formations, lush forests and gorges. It is a perfect place for hiking lovers or those who have a deep appreciation for natural wonders.
Some of the top sights include Pravčická Archway, Edmund’s Gorge, Elbe River.
Moravian Karst
Moravian Karts is yet another enchanting place in the Czech Republic. It is a protected nature reserve located near the town Blansko which is not far away from the second largest city – Brno.
It is one of the most significant karst regions in Central Europe because of the Macocha Abyss which is the deepest abyss of its kind in Central Europe reaching nearly 140 metres.
There are more than one thousand caves in the Moravian Karst, however, only five are accessible to the public. The most-known among travellers is the Punkva Caves which you can explore by taking a guided boat ride along an underground Punkva River and the bottom of the Macocha Abyss.
To this day this is one of the most impressive cave tours I had, even if I couldn’t understand a word due to guides only speaking in Czech. You can read a more detailed guide on Macocha Abyss and Punkva Caves here.
Skanzen Modrá and Archaeological Heritage Village
This small village in Moravia just might be the biggest sustainable development project in the country. What once was a brownfield has now become a lively area, filled with native species of fruit and tree species, as well as rare animal species and plants that was once gone from this land. Even a replica of a Great Moravian settlement from the 9th century has been created for the full effect.
Here you can explore an educational area called Living Water, where you can learn about the importance of water in the landscape. There is also a 8m underwater tunnel from which you can watch fish and water animals.
Mosaic House Hotel
Sustainable tourism is not only about sustainable destinations but also sustainable accommodation. If you plan on staying in Prague for a few days, then the best choice for accommodation is Mosaic House hotel.
It provides eco-friendly accommodation that runs on a greywater system with heat recuperation and 100% renewable energy sources. Not only that but they also offer bike rentals and eco-tours across the city.
Inside the hotel and during your stay there you will be reminded to consider your impact on the environment from saving water to recycling your waste. There isn’t a better place to stay in Prague than this hotel if you want to minimize your footprint as much as possible.
Visit one of the eco-farms
If you are looking for a truly authentic and sustainable travel idea, then why not give a visit to one of the local eco-farms?
There are quite a few eco-farms in the country that you can check out and some of the farms even offer their visitors accommodation that allows them to learn more about the life in the country. This is a great way to not only see beautiful nature, taste organic home-made products but also meet locals and learn more about their customs and way of life.
Here are some of the farms that you can visit:
- Jáňův dvůr farm – located in the small village near Mikulov, the eco-farm is perfect for idylic escape.
- Nosek bee farm – located near Telč which is a city included among UNESCO monuments.
- Bio farm Slunečná – located near the Šumava National Park, Lipno Dam and lake Plešné jezero.
