What is Happiness and How to Achieve It?
Have you noticed that the most popular answer to all the questions relating future, goals and achievements is happiness? I bet at least once in your life you have said the phrase ‘I want to be happy’. I am going to be honest with you, I did too. But what is happiness? When does one realise that he’s happy?
I decided to write this post because I noticed something in today’s society and I want to address it. I don’t necessarily want to preach something by this post or declare that I’m right and that my opinion is the one rightful one because I know it isn’t. I rather want to examine this situation and maybe give you a different view. So you can say that this is another MotivSpiration post in which I try to inspire you a bit and simply get something off my chest.
Going back to my first question of this post, have you noticed it? Do you find yourself setting a goal of being happy? I used to do the same and it really makes me think now. If I set one of my goals as to be happy, am I not happy now?
If I want to make happiness as a goal, what do I need to do to achieve it? More importantly, when do I know that I achieved it?
I once was quite sad and a negativity filled person with the view that everyone hated me, my life isn’t good, and that I am only wasting time here. So back then I made one of my goals ‘to be happy’. But what did I need to do to become happy? What was stopping me from not being happy then? The answer is simple: me.
I was stopping myself from enjoying life, from feeling content with my life and myself. I was holding myself back from being happy. I didn’t need to set a goal to become happy because happiness isn’t something you can work towards to or create. It’s an emotion. You only need to let yourself believe it and embrace it. You need to learn to love who you are, what you do and where you are.
Does it make sense?
Probably not. I have trouble understanding what I’m trying to say to you too. But what I really want you to understand is that happiness isn’t some kind of goal or achievement that you can set and work towards. If you’re one of those people who set one of your goals ‘to be happy’, why you did that? How will you know that you reached your goal? Why can’t you be happy now?
Do you need a beautiful big house to feel happy? Do you need a significant other to feel happy? Do you need to get that dream job to be happy? Do you need to travel the whole world to be happy?
I say no. You don’t need to have all of that to be happy. You can be happy just sitting in front of a computer and typing something, you can be happy laying in your bed and reading a book. You can even be happy doing your homework or other assignments. I think we sometimes are waiting for that big crack when one day your happiness suddenly “arrives” and knocks on your door. In reality, it’s not going to happen. Happiness isn’t some kind of final destination or place. It’s a continues effort, events, activities, habits that you adapt to that create happiness in someone’s life.
I found a research that scientists did and according to it, happiness is ‘a combination of how satisfied you are with your life and how good you feel on a day-to-day basis’. It does sound quite complicated but if we look deeper into this, it’s not so difficult.
Thing is that you have an ability to control how you feel. You can choose to stay angry or upset for something or you can choose to move on and let it be only 5minutes of bad time rather than a bad day. Also, you can develop habits that will help you stay on track and keep that feeling present. Here’re few ideas:
- Start a morning routine
- Indulge yourself with activities you love
- Start your day with a positive affirmation
- Appreciate little things
- Have a getaway
- Make a change
- Set aside time to relax every single day
Happiness can seem like a very difficult and unreachable thing for those who are struggling with mental illnesses or really bad situations but half of us aren’t dealing with serious things like that, so why are we stopping ourselves from being happy?
Truth is that we won’t be feeling all positive and ecstatic 24/7 and being happy isn’t that. Being happy is still being satisfied with what you have in your life and enjoying your life nevertheless.
