I really love Pancakes Day. And not only because I get to eat as many pancakes as I want to. I love this day for how it’s celebrated in my country. It’s called UΕΎgavΔnΔs in Lithuania what means “the time before Lent”. During this day, there is always a carnival held near Kaunas City in RumΕ‘iΕ‘kΔs. The main element of this carnival is an effigy of winter – called MorΔ in Lithuanian – burning. There is also a staged fight between LaΕ‘ininis (“Porky”) personifying winter and Kanapinis (“Hempen Man”) personifying spring. This fight symbolises the defeat of winter.Β
People dress up as devils, witches, goats, gypsies, the grim reapersΒ and other frightening characters during this celebration. All who participate dance, play games, eat pancakes and have a great time. This celebration is basically a day to make winter go away. Everyone is chanting “Winter, winter go away!” over and over again while watching MorΔ burn. There are also lots of markets around with handmade crafts and delicious food like Lithuanian ring-shaped rolls.Β
