Recently I’ve been experiencing troubles falling asleep at night. That resulted in me falling asleep very late, catching no quality sleep, being tired and angry at everyone. There were many different reasons behind my crappy sleeping regime and step by step I’m trying to fix them all.
Sleeping struggles and solutions that college and professionals might face is the topic that needs to be addressed more, especially in today’s world. So I wanted to share some of the more common ones with you all and also talk a bit about my sleeping problems.
Maybe some of you are facing the same problems and you’ll find this post helpful. Especially with the new semester coming up. To all fellow college/university students, I feel you.
Sleeping problem #1: Having a busy mind
I tend to overthink every little detail of my day or the recent year when I need to sleep. I don’t know why my mind wants to torture me like this but trust it to bring back the most embarrassing moments…
I’m sure a lot of you have experienced this overthinking ritual just before your sleepy time. It’s very annoying.
How I solved it?
I started writing a journal at the end of the day. It helps me to unwind after the day and put all the thoughts that might be bothering me on the sheet of paper instead of holding them inside my head. I wrote a post quite awhile ago about how writing has become sort of my therapy which I recommend reading if you’re interested.
Sleeping problem #2: Not being tired
This is probably one of the biggest problems I’ve faced during the last month. I just don’t feel tired. I felt like I had all the energy in the world and I could do so much still. It wouldn’t be so bad if that energy didn’t come at around 3 a.m. and I had to wake up at 6 a.m.
How I solved it?
First, I turned off wifi on my phone and put it away so I couldn’t reach it. It changed the way I sleep for the better. I no longer have an urge to check my phone whenever I hear a buzz. Also, I try to not use the phone at least for 20 minutes until my sleep.
If I feel like I need something else to lure me to sleep, I pick a book and read it until I fall asleep. Sometimes it backfires and I end up reading the whole book (because it is so good and I can’t put it down) and suddenly it’s 4 a.m. Ups.
You can also try counting sheep if that’s what helps you… You will never know until you try! Sometimes a mattress may be the cause so make sure it’s comfortable. I found interesting articles and guides on TopMattress website which were very helpful.
Sleeping problem #3: Sleeping anxiety
The worst of all sleeping problems. Sleeping anxiety can hit you at the worst times. Especially when you need to catch some zzz’s before an important exam or a flight. The thing about sleeping anxiety is that it’s more a mental problem you face than discomfort while sleeping, let’s say. You can’t change your sleeping position or read a book to stop that anxiety.
If you can’t fall asleep, you start to worry about not getting enough sleep. The more you worry, the less you sleep and the less you sleep, the more you worry. It’s a circle that is hard to escape.
How I solved it?
There are days when I still struggle with sleeping anxiety but I feel like I managed to deal with it quite effectively. A little stretch before bedtime is a good way to go. It helps to reduce any negative energy and brings down your heart and breathing race to prepare for sleep.
You can also try meditating or using an app which helps to calm down anxiety. I personally am not a fan of this kind of apps and meditation is something I fail at every time I try. But if it works for you, go for it!
These are the main problems I am facing normally when trying to fall asleep. I think a fast pace of our world and a huge amount of things that I have on my hands right now create a lot of stress that causes sleeping problems. Apart from doing all the things that I mentioned previously, I’m trying to take up less work and having some leisure days just to keep my head clear and minimize anxiety levels in my system. Of course, having a comfortable pillow to sleep on is a huge plus as well.
I’ve been falling asleep around 11 p.m. almost every single day, so I guess I’m doing much better now. Hopefully, new semester won’t make me go to the square one.
