Visiting Christmas Markets in Berlin, Germany

Yes, I finally got around to writing this exciting and very festive post. Some of you (read: probably all of you) might be aware that I went to Berlin in December to visit Christmas markets. I am a huge fan of Christmas markets and love the way they create such a festive and amazing atmosphere every year before the big holidays. Last year I visited Tallin’s markets and this year it was time for the famous Germany markets.

We only had 2 days in Berlin as it was weekend and there is this thing called the university that doesn’t like me travelling and leaving it behind… So we packed our bags and drove to the winter wonderland – or at least hoped it was it – on a fine Friday morning. We booked a lovely apartment at Das Literaturhotel Berlin which is basically a literature themed hotel created in honour of all writers that lived on that street the hotel is based, and let me tell you that there were A LOT of writers.

The whole hotel was very lovely and looked like a family business. We felt very welcomed and well treated, the owners were so kind and friendly. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are looking for something not luxury but more on the homey side. Our apartment was with 3 rooms, so each got a room for themselves. The only downside was that the wifi got a bit crappy in the evenings as we were staying at the top floor, so the connection was a bit slow.

A huge plus to this hotel is that the U- and S-Bahn station was 5 minutes away, so everything was very reachable. We bought 24 hours ticket for a group (up to 5 persons) that included AB tariff zones. It was about 20 euros and it was way cheaper than buying tickets for each of us individually. We only planned to explore the main Berlin part which was Old Town and the whole centre, so AB tariff zones involved all of that.

We visited 4 Christmas markets in total and it was a blast! I drank way too much mulled wine and ate a lot of german wursts. The basic dish as a bread with a sausage and sauce, what looks like a hotdog, tastes too good to pass. I was so full after that trip, it was ridiculous. We also bought few bits and pieces from the markets for yourselves and our friends.

So many talented crafters were in those markets that I was pleasantly surprised. You just want to spend all the money you have on those things, especially the ones that are handmade. We bought a very lovely candle stand for our grandmother that was made from glass pieces. Also, we couldn’t skip roasted peanuts that came in every flavour you can imagine. It’s like a heaven out there!

One thing you need to know is that some of those markets aren’t free and you have to pay like 5 euros or so for an entrance. But it’s all worth it, I promise. One thing that surprised me the most was the fact that so many people visited those markets and basically came there to have fun and maybe eat. Markets in Lithuania are so far away from these and it was a whole different experience for me.

After visiting all those markets, we, of course, explored a bit of Berlin. We didn’t have much time, so our exploration time was very limited. We saw Reichstag’s building which was enormous! We went to see it in the evening, so my camera again a bit failed me, so not many photos of it were made. We went to visit the famous Berlin Wall and it was a very interesting experience. Also, we visited other famous architecture wonders during our trip that I find very pleasing to the eye. However, I feel like there is so much to see still in Berlin and I’m hoping to get back there once again in the future, maybe in a bit warmer time of the year.
